Therapeutic Baking Groups

The therapeutic baking groups are designed to promote connection, sense of safety, provide psychoeducation on common mental health experiences, and help individuals to develop skills, thinking patterns, self-care and knowledge to help improve their mental health.

Baking can be both a sensory activity and mindfulness activity, I draw on these experiences and relevant research to use baking as a tool to not only facilitate connection and develop a sense of safety, but to act as a grounding and self-regulatory tool whilst discussing sensitive topics. The groups are specifically tailored to explore the experiences of individuals accessing these groups and to therapeutically explore specific themes.

Each week is focused on a specific theme, but there are no requirements for individuals to share their experiences within the group; you can simply listen and be a part of the group if this is what you would find most helpful. Likewise, although I may encourage you to explore the baking activity this can be done in a variety of ways; you can be fully hands-on and sensory led or you may prefer to use utensils and/or gloves. If the sensory environment becomes too overstimulating, we can work together to find a solution that works for you.

The groups will start and end with a mindfulness activity and/or icebreaker and you will get to take home what you have made as well as resource sheets which you may find helpful.

  • The groups can be held for 4-8 attendees and may be offered as a one-off session or in a 4-6 week program.
  • I primarily offer these groups to charities and organisations, where I come to your organisation to deliver the groups.
  • I also offer throughout the year sessions for individuals to join online, or in local venues/at some of my therapy rooms.
  • The sessions can be held for adults or children and can be adapted dependent on length of time, disability and/or to accommodate some allergens.
  • The groups do not need to be held at a cooking facility. Although this can help, many of my sessions are focused on the pre-baking stages (think making a bread dough), the decorating stages, and I have some transportable equipment for things like cupcakes.
  • Individuals get to take home their creations and a resources pack (I encourage individuals to bring their own containers to take home their creations).
